New USPS ‘Star Wars’ Stamps Are The Droids You’re Looking For
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is releasing a new collection of stamps celebrating our favorite droids from Star Wars, including R2-D2, C3-PO and BB-8.
“These set of droids are a nod to Lucasfilm’s, as well as its parent company, Disney’s, commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and the continued collaboration between ‘Star Wars: Force for Change’ and global pre-K-12 nonprofit organization ‘FIRST’ (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)”, the postal service said.
‘Star Wars: Force for Change’ and ‘FIRST’ have joined forces to expand access to STEM learning to more young people around the world, and to help them envision a brighter, more inclusive future.
Fans will recognize the background of each stamp as they are set against iconic backdrops from films and TV, which droids have played a pivotal roll throughout the Star Wars saga.
The droids featured in this collection are IG-11, R2-D2, K-2SO, D-O, L3-37, BB-8, C-3PO, a GNK (or Gonk) power droid, 2-1B surgical droid and C1-10P, commonly known as “Chopper”, representing more than four decades of inspiration, innovation and storytelling.
The stamps are due to be issued at date later this year, coinciding with Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary in 2021. Greg Breeding designed the stamps and pane, while William Gicker was art director.
These stamps are so beautifully designed it’ll be hard to use them on something so mundane as mail. We may just have to frame them!
